Campylobacter bacteria: Food poisoning is most common due to a harmful virus called Campylobacter. Eating raw and semi-cooked meat causes these bacteria to enter our bodies. It can also be caused by drinking unfiltered water and milk that has not been boiled properly. Symptoms appear within 3 to 10 days after the bacteria enter the body. It can take up to a week to heal but can become severe if the immune system is weakened.

Listeria monocytogenic bacteria: This type of bacterial infestation is more common in foods that are pre-prepared for food. Such bacteria attack fast food, cooked meat, and oily foods. Such bacteria can cause older people, lower immunity, and risk to pregnant mothers.

Salmonella and E. coli bacteria: These types of bacteria are not cooked properly in meat, they are more common in raw eggs, milk, and dairy foods. Symptoms appear within 12 to 72 hours of the bacteria entering the body. Fever, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea are some of the main symptoms.

Shigella bacteria: Washing any food with contaminated water can cause viruses and bacterial infections. The disease occurs 3 to 7 days after the bacteria enter the body. The main symptoms are nausea and diarrhea. This problem lasts for 3-7 days.

Clostridium perfringen & Bacillus cereus bacteria: Infection with this bacteria can cause intestinal inflammation, vomiting, and diarrhea. The presence of this bacteria occurs after more than 2 hours in cooked food. So food should always be reheated before eating.

Botulism bacteria: This type of disease is caused by a deadly bacteria called Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Common symptoms are vomiting and diarrhea and severe infections can lead to paralysis of various parts of the body.

Which foods need special attention?

Meat: Raw meat is most attacked by bacteria so it should be cooked and eaten well. However, before cooking, the meat should be washed very well with clean water to reduce the risk of bacteria spreading to other foods. Fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetables should be washed very well with clean water. Care should be taken not to have any type of soil or sand. Unclean rice: BBC Goodfood reports that unwashed rice contains a bacteria called Bacillus carias that can cause food poisoning. Sprouted Peas: Never buy unprocessed sprouted peas. And before cooking and eating peas should be thoroughly washed with clean water.

Bean seeds: Red bean seeds contain naturally occurring phytohemagglutinin called lectin which can cause food poisoning. This type of food should be soaked in clean water for a while and then cooked well at the right temperature. This will kill the naturally occurring germs.

Also, fruits and vegetables use pesticides to control insects. Eating those foods before the allotted time can cause such problems.

How can you avoid stomach upset problems?

  • No food should be touched without washing hands thoroughly with soap after catching pets or coming out of the toilet and catching dirt.
  • No expired food can be eaten. Always check the expiration date before buying food.
  • Always store food at the prescribed temperature. You have to finish eating within 2 days after cooking.
  • Thoroughly clean the area where we cook or prepare food with hot water or soap. It is important to wash the fish or meat very well after washing.
  • No pets should be allowed to enter the cooking or food preparation area. If the pet somehow gets into the kitchen, clean it well.
  • Food should never be left open and should not be left for more than 2 hours after opening the packet.
  • Never eat food over low heat. Always warm up very well before meals.
